While today’s anticipated weather was never ideal, there was hope mother nature would be kind for a few hours this afternoon. That is not the case and today’s heaviest rains and winds are forecasted for exactly when Trick-or-Treat on Main Street takes place. It’s with great disappointment to announce the cancellation of today’s organized activities. All road closure permits are conditional and unfortunately a Main Street detour is just not possible. Protecting the safety of pedestrians, motorists, and our community as a whole is of the upmost importance. Trick-or-Treat is more than another event, its special community gathering is made possible by the generosity and commitment of businesses and organizations. As an alternative, stop by downtown businesses during business hours this weekend to pick up treats (local businesses, feel free to share your respective hours/details below). Additionally, the Stafford Garden Club will be distributing candy in Haymarket Common tomorrow, October 31, from 4:00pm – 6:00pm.

Trick-or-Treat on Main Street
Saturday, October 30, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Put on your favorite costumes and join the fun! Each year, Stafford's Main Street closes to auto traffic and opens as a pedestrian walkway for costumed families to enjoy a safe and social Halloween event. For two hours - or until candy runs out - costumed kiddos collect goodies from participating merchants, the First United Methodist Church (8 Church Street, where trunk-or-treat is held), and in Haymarket Common, which hosts additional Stafford businesses and civic groups wanting to distribute treats from “pop-up” tables or booths.
A Main Street parking ban will begin at 2:00 p.m.
A road closure will be in effect from 4pm-6pm (from the Holt Fountain to Route 140).
Stafford Garden Club Scarecrow Contest
Augmenting trick-or-treat activities, the Stafford Garden Club also hosts their Annual Scarecrow Decorating Contest; homemade creations line Main Street throughout the month of October and with final voting taking place during Trick-or-Treat on Main Street.
Off-Main business and organizations
Want to participate and pass out candy, but don't have a Main Street Address? Businesses and organizations are welcome to set up a table/canopy in Haymarket Common, the adjoining gravel lot, and along the sidewalk between Spring Street and the Ice Cream Depot. For easy load-in and pedestrian safety, plan to setup prior to 3:00 p.m. (street offload only, vehicles are not permitted to drive or park in any of the above areas). Vehicle can be offloaded at your chosen space (please use your hazard lights), but will need to be moved immediately following to a designated parking area. Main Street gets quite congested during this event, early arrival will allow for safer offload and closer proximity parking.
In its 9th year, Trick-or-Treat on Main Street has grown exponentially and has become an annual destination for hundreds of families. This cornerstone community event is made possible only by the generosity of participating businesses and organizations. To help alleviate some of their sizable out-of-pocket expenses a candy, a candy drive is currently underway. Any brand/type is graciously accepted, but request all candy individually wrapped/sealed. Every bag helps! If you can help, please drop candy donations to Stafford Town Hall or call 860-331-0243.
State Guidance on Outdoor Gatherings
Persons should continue to wear a mask outdoors when they are in large crowds or when social distancing is difficult to maintain. Please wear a mask and social distance as much as possible, especially if you are unvaccinated. If you feel sick, please stay home. The Town of Stafford Department of Emergency Management will have masks available for pickup in front of the Police Station (2 Main Street) and hand sanitizer will be available for use throughout the event.
Trick-or-Treat on Main Street is scheduled for Saturday, October 30, unless weather conditions cause an unsafe road closure. All updates will be posted by noon on 10/30/21.
A big THANK YOU to our local merchants, businesses, community organizations, First Responders, and Town crews for making this event possible!
